The 2027 car tax could become lighter for millions of motorists. The new measure approved by the Government introduces an exemption for vehicles with power up to 80 kW. According to estimates, the provision could affect more than 70% of cars currently on the road. But what are the requirements to access the benefit and how will it be applied?
Car tax 2027: which cars will be exempt
The main requirement concerns the vehicle's power, which must not exceed 80 kW. The threshold affects a significant share of cars on the road, both petrol and diesel, from city cars to superminis and even some compact models. To check whether your vehicle qualifies for the relief, it is therefore necessary to consult the data shown in the vehicle documentation.
80 kW corresponds to about 109 hp, but for the purposes of the 2027 car tax exemption, the parameter to consider remains the one expressed in kilowatts.
How it works for hybrid cars
The measure also includes hybrid vehicles that meet the required criteria. In this case, to determine eligibility for the exemption, reference must be made to the power of the internal combustion engine according to the criteria established by the measure.
It is therefore important to consult your car's official technical data, especially when the power of the hybrid system and that of the internal combustion engine differ.
Can those who own more than one car benefit from the relief?
The exemption cannot be applied at the same time to all vehicles registered to the same person.
The benefit will be granted for only one vehicle per beneficiary. If a motorist owns several cars that meet the requirements, the criteria provided by the legislation will be applied to identify the one for which the relief is granted, in practice the one with the lowest power output.
The provision is therefore particularly relevant for those who have more than one car registered in their name.
How long will the car tax not be payable?
The relief applies to payments with the ordinary deadline falling between 1 January and 31 December 2027.
The exemption is therefore provided for a specific year. However, the Government has expressed its intention to make the measure permanent, but any confirmation for subsequent years will have to be established by further provisions.
Car tax 2027: what changes for motorists
The new rules therefore introduce relief aimed at a substantial portion of the Italian vehicle fleet. For vehicles that comply with the rules, payment of the tax will be suspended for the year covered by the measure.
To know in detail the requirements applicable to your car and check for any updates to the legislation, it will be necessary to wait for the final entry into force of the provisions and the operational guidance from the competent authorities.
